Raven watched Ramon Crozier’s apartment building from across the street. He sat beside Ike Galeri in Galeri’s car.

The hours after the gunfight in the park had been long indeed. Raven and Galeri first took his car to a garage where nobody asked questions and they replaced the rear window. Raven noted other mechanics stripping cars for parts and altering VIN numbers and license plates but a raised eyebrow from Ike kept him from pointing out the obvious. Sometimes one had to swim with the bad guys to catch bigger bad guys.

When Ramon’s Mini finally pulled out of the curbside parking space, with both Ramon and Monique inside, Raven told Ike to sit tight and exited the car. He hurried across the street at a brief break in traffic and slipped through the entrance. He’d have expected Ramon to have an apartment building with a doorman, unless he thought the place was low-profile enough to avoid the extra interaction with staff who might get curious about his business.

Raven’s lock picks made getting inside easy, but as he stepped through the doorway, he had to search for the next obvious obstacle. An alarm box. Raven doubted there’d be one. Alarms brought attention and sometimes sent alerts to the police. Somebody on the border of the law like Ramon Crozier wouldn’t want any police involvement whatsoever in his affairs. He had other ways of handling problems, Raven figured.

Raven shut the door. The walls of the entryway displayed paintings, not alarm boxes. And those needed to be close to the door so a homeowner could punch the cancel code before the noise went off.

He started in the kitchen. Very clean, dishes stacked in a wire rack beside the sink. Enough dishes for two. He wondered how long Monique was staying and where she lived. Another question for Ike later. Raven hadn’t thought of asking earlier.

Raven examined the dining table. Nothing fancy. Formica top, chairs showing their age. A right turn into the living room. More cleanliness, but a rumpled blanket sat atop another folded Afghan on one end of the couch. No dust on the TV screen.

Down the hall; he stopped at the hall closet. Shelves packed with labeled boxes, various electronic items, stuff Crozier wanted packed away instead of sold. Two bedrooms and a bathroom at the end of the hall. The bath counter had more female hair products and associated items than male.

Master bedroom needed attention. Bed not made; clothes thrown on the back of a corner chair. Female clothes.

Jackpot in the guest room. A spread of glossy black-and-white photos lay on the tightly-made bed, the opposite of the master. Raven frowned as he examined each picture. The man most featured meant nothing to him. Raven snapped pictures of the pictures with his cell phone. A map of Paris on the wall with a circle caught his attention. He snapped a shot. He was grinning when he left the apartment and used the lock picks to re-lock the door. When he returned to Ike Galeri’s car, and dropped into the passenger seat, he still had the grin on his face.
